St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, a Houma
landmark, was on the National Registry of
Historic Places. The cypress building was
built in 1896. The Church was perhaps
best-known for its Gothic revival architecture
and magnificent stained-glass windows.
A devastating fire in the early-morning
hours of November 11, 2010 destroyed our
Church, leaving little more than the historic
building’s front steps and part of the
steeple. The school building that was adjacent
to the church which housed administrative
offices, Kindergarten and first grade
classrooms and the science lab also
burned.
In his first sermon after the fire Father Craig
Dalferes said, "I am so grateful, grateful for
all the years I got to spend worshipping in
our Stradivarius. Grateful for all the lives I
saw touched there, and for all the lives that
touched mine. And more than anything,
grateful for the grace of God in that place.
Over 100 years ago our forebears created
that amazing space. And they passed it
down to us. What an amazing gift. And now
it is our turn to do the same thing. We will
build another Church and School. We will
build it to the Glory of God. And we will
pass it on as a treasure for those who come
after us."
The school and church stand together in
our commitment to rebuild. Eight short
weeks after the fire, modular buildings were
installed on campus, providing new learning
space for the Kindergarten and first grade
classrooms that perished. The mighty spirit
of St. Matthew’s has not only sustained us
through our trials, but grows even stronger!
After much thought and prayer, we decided to look into
changing schools and St. Matthew’s was one of our options.
After touring the school and meeting the staff, we were
highly impressed and very excited to begin a new school
year here. Having been at St. Matthew’s through this trying
year, we have witnessed a fellowship and community that is
truly remarkable. My daughter has thrived in this loving,
supportive school environment and we have been amazed
by the progress she has made both emotionally and academically.
She loves her school and is excited to wake up
in the morning; this is something we have never experienced
until now. We are blessed to be considered a member
of such an outstanding St. Matthew's family!
