St. Matthew’s Episcopal School Overview...

Spanish Language Overview

n a program largely aural/oral by design, all Pre-K through 7th grade students are introduced to the Spanish language using a carefully selected vocabulary in order to create opportunities for successful communication. Our program also teaches the children about the culture of the Spanish speaking world and points out cultural similarities and differences. This is done creatively by use of songs, role playing, art projects, puppets and games.

All St. Matthew’s students expand their linguistic base through continued attention to pronunciation and intonation as well as increased individual and group participation. Question and answer role-playing, sounds, rhymes, poems and round robin oral practice leading to mini skits and dialogues all contribute to the growing proficiency. Word recognition skills and reading readiness in Spanish are introduced using simple sound-letter correspondences.

¡Adiós!

Good-bye

¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?

Hello How are you?

" What makes St. Matthew’s unique is the smaller class sizes, teachers and staff who know each individual child on so many levels and curriculum that is growing and changing to meet the needs of the students."

Library

To encourage the students to read, SMES uses the Accelerated Reader program. This program allows students to choose a book at their own reading level and read it at their own pace. Once completed, the student takes an AR quiz on the computer. The computerized quiz will score the student’s level of comprehension. AR quizzes can be taken in the student's classroom, before school or during recess breaks. Plans for the future include automating our library and purging outdated materials.
